The Canadiens also announced defenseman Kaiden Guhle had surgery on a partially torn abductor muscle Thursday in New York and is expected to miss eight to 10 more weeks.
Newhook sustained his injury after he was taken down by Dallas defenseman Ilya Lyubushkin before sliding feet-first into the end boards during the second period of Thursday's game against the Stars. Lyubushkin was whistled for a minor penalty on the play.
Newhook, 24, has recorded 12 points (six goals, six assists) in 17 games this season.
A Stanley Cup winner with Colorado, Newhook has totaled 138 points (63 goals, 75 assists) in 313 career games with the Avalanche and Canadiens.
Guhle has been sidelined since falling to the ice midway through the third period of Montreal's 3-2 overtime win against the Nashville Predators on Oct. 17. He doubled over upon reaching the bench and did not return to the ice.
Guhle, 23, has two points (one goal, one assist) and a plus-1 rating in five games this season.
He has totaled 60 points (17 goals, 43 assists) in 174 career games since being selected by Montreal with the 16th overall pick of the 2020 NHL Draft.
