Chase Headley Meets New Team Mid-Game, Hits Walk-Off Single In 14th
That's newly-acquired Yankees third baseman Chase Headley meeting his new coaches and teammates for the first time since he was traded from the Padres earlier in the day. He had to catch a flight from Chicago, where San Diego was set to play the Cubs, so he was not expected to get to the stadium on time—Joe Girardi said he might be available off the bench—but he got to the Bronx around 7:30 p.m. and eventually made his way to the dugout.
It was a pretty weird scene, Headley working his way down the dugout, shaking hands and introducing himself to pitching coach Larry Rothschild, first base coach Mick Kelleher, and the rest of his team for the first time while the game was going on. Amazingly, he did not enter the game until the eighth inning and wound up with four at bats.
In the eighth inning, Headley entered the game to pinch hit for Zelous Wheeler and struck out. He grounded out to first in the 11th, and to second base in the 12th. In the 14th inning he finally got a hit and won the game.
The Rangers took a 1-0 lead in the 13th thanks to a J.P. Arencibia solo home run and the Yankee bats awoke in the bottom half because, why not, let's play baseball forever. But finally, mercifully, True Yankee Chase Headley came through in the 14th. With runners on the corners and the outfield playing in the infield, Headley still managed to flare one into left center field that just fell between Jim Adduci and Leonys Martin. Yankees win, Derek Jeter smilingly approves.
