Edwin Encarnación Helped Off Field After Gross Ankle Injury [UPDATE]
Cleveland slugger Edwin Encarnación left today’s ALDS game against the Yankees in the first inning with help from teammates after suffering a gruesome leg injury while attempting to return to second base after a soft liner.
Encarnación had reached base by a HBP, then advanced on a Carlos Santana single. Initially judged to have been safe in the attempt that led to his injury, replay later called Encarnación out to end the inning; since he’s the designated hitter, he’s technically still in the ballgame, but we don’t expect to see him back.
Update (6:04 p.m.): As expected, Encarnación was pinch-hit for in the second inning. Michael Brantley is the new Cleveland DH.
