Mexico's Marco Fabián Scored A Beautiful, Futile Golazo
In the 89th minute of the Confederations Cup semifinal between Mexico and Germany, Mexico substitute Marco Fabián, while standing midway between the halfway line and the penalty box, received a pass off a free kick, stepped up to the ball, and clobbered the hell out of it.
With Mexico down 3-0 and the final whistle fast approaching, the rocket to the upper right corner likely stemmed more from frustration and desperation than any strategic plan, but it worked anyhow and boy was it gorgeous.
The shot came so fast, even the broadcasters—who were still replaying the foul that set up the free kick—missed showing it live. A few moments later, Germany scored again to go up 4-1.
Germany will play Chile in the Confederations Cup final on Sunday.
