Mikaela Shiffrin Failed To Medal In Her Best Event
Photo: Morry Gash/ [object Object] Fresh off a a gold-medal win less than 24 hours prior in the giant slalom, Team USA’s Mikaela Shiffrin seemed poised to build momentum with another gold in her best event: the (regular) slalom. However, Shiffrin couldn’t even get to the podium, finishing fourth with a total time across two runs of 1:39.03 while Frida Hansdotter of Sweden took gold with 1:38.63.
Shiffrin was only 18 when she won gold in the slalom at Sochi in 2014, and she famously told reporters after that victory, “Right now, I’m dreaming of the next Olympics (and) winning five gold medals.” That won’t happen, barring a reversal on her decision not to compete in the super-G, but Shiffrin will still go for gold at the downhill next Tuesday, the super combined on the following Thursday, and possibly the team event next Friday.
