Hall Of Fame To Allow Junior Seau's Daughter To Speak At Induction
According to Fox Sports, the Pro Football Hall of Fame has decided not to be a complete dick and will allow Junior Seau’s daughter, Sydney Seau, to speak via an on-stage interview at next Saturday’s induction ceremony.
The Hall will continue to uphold its rule calling for only a video presentation of a posthumous inductee that includes the presenter’s speech. However, the Hall has taped a 6 1/2-minute highlight video of Seau’s 20-year NFL career that includes comments from Sydney. The normal highlight video lasts three minutes.
Sydney also will be participating in the Thursday night “Gold Jacket” ceremony that marks the first major Hall event of the week. She will be given the chance to make remarks during the NFL Network telecast.
The move comes after the Hall of Fame received backlash for stating that Seau’s daughter, whom Seau himself wanted to give his induction speech, would not be allowed to give a speech at the ceremony based off a supposed 2011 rule stating all posthumous inductions would forgo live speeches.
Seau was a 12-time Pro Bowler and played for the San Diego Chargers, Miami Dolphins, and New England Patriots before retiring in 2009. Seau committed suicide in 2012, and his family is currently litigating a wrongful death lawsuit regarding his passing.
