Poor Dan Ellis Got Freight-Trained, Then Scored Upon
It's not supposed to work this way. Carolina goalie Dan Ellis was just minding his net and his own business, trying to wrest playing time from young Justin Peters in the wake of Cam Ward's MCL sprain. When—bam!—he gets bowled over by Ryan Callahan. Before he can collect himself, or scramble to his skates, Derek Stepan pops the puck in over his prone body.
The goal stood because the officials ruled Callahan was pushed into the goalie by Joni Pitkanen. It would be the Rangers' only goal in a shootout win. But even in the charity point skills competition, nothing went right for Ellis. After Rick Nash scored on an indefensible move, New York clinched the victory with this "oh shit oh shit oh shit hey I scored" improvisation from rookie J.T. Miller. There will be better days, Dan.
