Russell Westbrook's Tired Of Talking About Kevin Durant
It feels like every time Kevin Durant talks about his new gig with the Golden State Warriors, someone runs those quotes over to Oklahoma City and throws them at Russell Westbrook, hoping that he’ll sniff around, find a part he likes, and sink his teeth into it. Westbrook’s had enough of the cycle, but it’s still fodder for everyone else.
Today’s offering was something Durant said about the Warriors at an award ceremony for the team on Tuesday. From the Mercury News:
“You can feel it when you walk in the door, in the practice facility, everybody is just together. That’s something that I can appreciate as a basketball player and someone who values relationships. You can tell that that’s what they stand on, that’s what we stand on. I feel really grateful to play for a team like that and play with a bunch of players who are selfless and enjoy the game in its purest form.”
At today’s practice, a reporter read parts of that comment to Westbrook. “That’s cute, man,” Westbrook said. “That’s cute. My job is to be able to worry about what’s going on here. We’re going to worry about all of the selfish guys we got over here, apparently.”
After a followup, Westbrook said that he’d stop answering questions about Durant, because he was “really tired of talking about it.”
Durant’s comments weren’t even that controversial; he was praising the team at an event awarding the Warriors’ organization for being the “entrepreneurial company of the year.” When he says something like, “You can tell that that’s what they stand on, that’s what we stand on,” the unspoken clause at the end is assumed to be: unlike the Thunder. Is that fair? Of course not.
Westbrook and Durant definitely aren’t on the same ground as they were when they were teammates, however. At the Thunder’s media day on Sept. 23, Westbrook claimed that he still hasn’t talked to Durant, outside of a text when he made his decision. Even if Westbrook honors his vow to stop answering questions about Kevin Durant, the status of their relationship should be made clear when the teams first play on Nov. 3.
