So Much For That 2-Seed For The Salukis
Just one automatic bid was on the line today... even less than than that if you're of the belief that Creighton and Southern Illinois were probably both already in the tournament. The poor Salukis have won the MVC regular season championship five times in the last six years, but have won just one of those conference tournaments. They should join the Ivy League.
Today's other conference tournament action came in the form of semifinals. I think it would have been nice to have a few more conference title games on this relatively idle Sunday, but I certainly understand if the NCAA people won't want to tangle with the ratings juggernaut that is Arena Football.
In semifinal action, though, Holy Cross and Bucknell advanced to the finals of the Patriot League tournament. The Northeast Conference Tournament's semifinals are currently being played. VCU awaits the winner of Old Dominion/George Mason in the Colonial, and Vermont will play Albany for the America East crown. Still to come tonight, Marist plays Siena and Niagara plays Loyola (Md.) in the Metro Atlantic semifinals, while San Diego takes on Gonzaga, and Saint Mary's has Santa Clara in the West Coast Conference semis.
Meanwhile, in big boy basketball (sorry, mid-majors), Florida got a little bit of their swerve back today against Kentucky. Joakim Noah remembered that he was Joakim Noah, and had 17 and 10. Clemson went on the road and knocked off Virginia Tech, depriving them of a share of the ACC title, a title of which UNC can earn a share if they go on to beat Duke this afternoon.
