The U.S. Women's Gymnastics Team Just Dunked On Everyone
The United States women’s gymnastics team, which will go down as the best gymnastics team ever assembled, just won the gold medal with a historically dominant performance in the team final.
Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, Laurie Hernandez, Gabby Douglas, and Madison Kocian finished the event with a total score of 184.897. The second-place Russian team had a score of 176.688, and the United States’ 8.209-point margin of victory is the largest that’s ever been recorded at a major meet under the current scoring system. Today’s performance was the capstone on what’s been a dominant run for USA women’s gymnastics:
Simone Biles led the way, scoring a 15.8 on her floor routine, a 15.9 on her vault, and 15.3 on the beam. Madison Kocian came through with a 15.9 on the uneven bars, and Aly Raisman followed up her strong performance at the 2012 games with a 15.8 on the vault and a 15.3 on her floor routine.
At the end of the competition, the team huddled up for a cheer, shouting, “We are the Final Five!” The nickname is a reference to the fact that the Olympic teams will be reduced to four at the 2020 games, but I like to think it carries a second meaning. This team is the Final Five because there’s really no point in anyone else trying to do gymnastics after this. They’ve perfected all aspects of the discipline, and everyone else should just give up.
