What Are The Dodgers Even Doing?
These aren't your father's Dodgers. Hell, these aren't the same Dodgers from when you went to bed. Andrew Friedman has been busy at his first Winter Meetings representing a team with resources, and he has revamped the Dodgers roster—well, basically overnight.
What's happened so far in the Dodgers' attempt to reserve an entire agate page for themselves:
L.A. acquired shortstop Jimmy Rollins from Philadelphia in exchange for, reportedly two minor-league pitchers, with whispers that a third team and some more moving parts might be involved.
The Dodgers sent a package including Dan Haren and Dee Gordon to the Marlins for a group of assets headlines by pitching prospect Andrew Heaney.
L.A. then spun Heaney off to the Angels for 2B Howie Kendrick.
The Dodgers sent Matt Kemp to the Padres for catcher Yasmani Grandal and a pair of pitching prospects.
Los Angeles is reportedly close to signing free-agent starter Brandon McCarthy to a four-year deal.
And they're far from done:
Blowing up a 94-win team isn't common, but you can see exactly what Friedman and new GM Farhan Zaidi are up to. They're not necessarily getting younger, but they are getting cheaper, and clearing more flexibility in the immediate future—both on the payroll and in opening up spots at short and in the outfield for top prospects Corey Seager and Joc Pederson.
Friedman said last night he still wants to add a starting pitcher (Cole Hamels?), and observers expect him to continue to try moving Andre Ethier and/or Carl Crawford. None of these moves will come cheap: the Dodgers will likely have to cover salary for their veteran outfielders, as they've sent along about $37 million along with Kemp, Haren, and Gordon. But it's got to be weird being on the other side of things for Friedman, who in Tampa always had to keep cost considerations in mind. Maybe that makes him—hyperaware of the value of money in trade talks—the exact right man for the Dodgers job.
